Embracing the Vision
June 1, 2016:
As a founding concept of the Christian faith, the Great Commission established an early blueprint for ministry. While times have changed, the words that were spoken then remain eternal. In adherence to this calling, Global University has long worked to reach forgotten areas, fully embracing the pursuit of the Great Commission.
Founded in the Pentecostal tradition, Global University from its very start established a concrete mission to prepare men and women for Spirit-empowered ministry worldwide. In order to advance this mission, certain standards for academics, governance, and the very nature of the institution were set in place. Global University developed relationships with multiple accreditation agencies and, through its work with the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), was established as a pioneer in distance learning.
This pioneering spirit has made it necessary for Global to regularly reexamine itself. Often, this period of introspective analysis has resulted in changes that are designed to best accommodate the achievement of a long-term vision. Through every change, this vision has remained constant and at the forefront of Global’s continuing mission. University President Dr. Gary Seevers may have put it best: “Our mission, our nature, and our academics all define our vision. To change our vision is to quench a flame of redemptive education for those most needing the light.”
With this sentiment in mind, Global University’s Board of Directors, in conjunction with the Board of Administration, recently faced decisions regarding how best to maintain this vision going forward. Multiple options were presented and analyzed, but in the end, only one remained. Through prayerful deliberation and as a unified body, Global University has decided to voluntarily resign from DEAC accreditation.
While a decision of this nature may seem odd, it came on the heels of a positive 10-year reaffirmation by the HLC, covering the university through the year 2025. As an agency, the Higher Learning Commission represents more than a century of educational accreditation, encompassing the largest collection of collegiate institutions, which spans over 19 states. This recent reaffirmation ensures that Global University has retained, in full, its regional accreditation for the years to come. John Bueno, Chair of Global University’s Board of Directors, reiterated the positive sentiments, saying, “Diligent prayer, the guiding of the Holy Spirit, and the HLC’s reaffirmation have made it very clear that we have made the best decision for Global going forward.”
Global University has been blessed to be able to continue acting as a steward of education worldwide. With that vision, our mission remains to bring affordable, accessible, and accredited pastoral education to those everywhere.
